FOUAD EL KHOURY, Lebanon (1952)
Bio
Fouad El-Khoury, born in Paris to Lebanese architect Pierre El-Khoury, embarked on a fascinating artistic journey that transitioned from architecture to photography. His lens captured the essence of daily life amidst the chaos of the Lebanese civil war, and he documented the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, finding himself aboard the Atlantis, the ship that evacuated Yasser Arafat, resulting in a captivating nautical photo essay.
In 1989, El-Khoury joined the esteemed Rapho agency, immersing himself in the vibrant culture of Egypt for a year. A defining moment in his career came in 1991 when he participated in a collective photographic project alongside renowned photographers such as Robert Frank, Raymond Depardon, René Burri, Josef Koudelka, and Gabriele Basilico. Their mission was to capture an iconic image of the ruined Beirut city center, resulting from the ravages of war.
Fouad’s passion for preserving visual history led him to co-find the Arab image Foundation, a remarkable non-profit organization dedicated to collecting, safeguarding, and studying photographs from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Arab diaspora.
His artistic achievements continued to garner recognition and acclaim. In 2002, El-Khoury received a prestigious commission from the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) to create a compelling body of work, resulting in the exhibition “Sombre”. The artist represented Lebanon at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 with his powerful series “On War and Love”, crafted in 2006. In 2011, his solo exhibition titled “Be…longing” captivated audiences at the Beirut Art Center.
Throughout his career, El-Khoury has seamlessly merged his artistic vision with a deep understanding of the human condition, leaving an indelible mark on the world of photography and visual story telling.
