JOHANNE ALLARD, Lebanon (1976)
Bio
Born in 1976, Johanne Allard is a versatile artist hailing from Canada, currently residing in Lebanon. She graduated with a BA in Theater & Visual Arts from the University of Quebec in Montreal in 1999, under the mentorship of the esteemed bronze sculptor Arto Tchakmakchian.
Relocating to Beirut in 2000, Johanne immersed herself in teaching art & theater while also directing numerous theatrical productions. Seeking further enrichment, she pursued studies under the late founder Augusto Boal at the "Theater of the Oppressed Lab" in New York in 2007. Upon her return to Beirut, she conducted workshops for educators and community leaders.
In 2011, Johanne embarked on a unique artistic journey, employing embroidery to craft sculptures that encapsulate the tumultuous essence of the Levant and Arab regions. Her artworks, often featuring insects as their motif, intricately weave together imagery of warfare mechanics and natural elements, drawing heavily from traditional cultural embroidery techniques. Her recent works delve deep into the graphic portrayal of tragedies, shedding light on the profound and enduring impact they have on individuals and society.
Recognized for her exceptional talent and vision, Allard was awarded a prestigious year-long grant from The Canada Council for the Arts in 2021. This grant facilitated the creation of her multimedia installation titled "Eat of Me While I Sleep," focusing on the theme of collective trauma.
