Rula Halawani, a native of occupied East Jerusalem is a photographer and educator based in Jerusalem. She began her artistic journey by documenting the harsh realities of life under protracted political conflict. Her early work captures the myriad challenges of daily existence under military occupation and the sudden transformations of Palestinian neighborhoods into war zones during periods of violent siege.
Halawani earned a Bachelor of Art in Advanced Photography from the University of Saskatchewan in 1989, and a Master of Art in Photographic Studies from the University of Westminster, London in 2001. She has also served as the founding director and an associate professor of the Photography program at Birzeit University. In 2016, the artist was awarded a residency fellowship at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, and in 2021, she received the Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Project Award.
Halawani's work has been exhibited globally at venues such as the Guangdong Museum of Art in China, the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit, and the American University Museum in Washington DC. Halawani's photographs are part of prestigious collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and The British Museum.
