SARA OUHADDOU, Morocco (1986)
Bio
Sara Ouhaddou was born in Draguignan, France, to a Moroccan family. Her career began as a designer for prominent fashion brands and eventually shifted to a more socially engaged practice, addressing the challenges faced by artisan communities in Morocco and examining the role of design in economic, social, and cultural development in the Arab world.
From 2013 to 2014, Sara participated in the French Institute Artist Residency in Morocco - Dar Al Ma Mûn. In 2015, she joined the Edge of Arabia Artist Program in NYC (ISCP NYC). Her work has been recognized with several awards, including the 2014' Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) Award and the 2015' Wanted Design NYC Special Prize.
Sara's art has been exhibited internationally, with notable shows at the Moulin d’Art Contemporain in Toulon, France (2015), Gaite Lyrique in Paris (2014), and the Marrakech Biennale (2016). In January 2017, she was selected by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs to create a public artwork for a new park in the historic Little Syria neighborhood.
In 2019, after completing a residency in Marseille, Sara began researching the history of alphabets, which led her to explore the narratives of identity and the successive replacement of civilizations. This research included investigating Marseille's history, focusing on hidden passages and artifacts from archaeological excavations, prompting a reevaluation of the city's historical narratives.
Today, the artist resides between France and Morocco.
