Laure Ghorayeb

Born in Der El Qamar in 1931, Laure Ghorayeb currently lives and works in Beirut. Since 1962 Ghorayeb has been actively pursuing careers in both fine art and cultural journalism. She has participated in solo and collective exhibitions locally and internationally, including the Paris, Baghdad and Alexandria Biennials, and notable regional art fairs including Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi. She has collaborated with her son Mazen Kerbaj on shows in 2007 and 2010, and more recently ‘Correspondance(s)’ at the Sursock Museum in 2019. Ghorayeb also took part in ‘Convergence - New Art from Lebanon’, at the Katzen Art Center of the American University in Washington DC. Her work is part of the British Museum’s permanent collection.

Laure’s delicate drawings on pocket-sized canvases are an antagonistic approach to reevaluate art based on content rather than scale. Perhaps the horrific memories of war have managed to steal her peaceful childhood, but not the impeccable sense of humor that is vividly displayed in her work. Each canvas in La Vitrine acts as a personal re-interpretation of everyday life. Laure breaks free from any commitments, pauses at every detail, and lets her figures transform into lines that leave the viewer in a direct conversation with her thoughts.
