The exhibition  Waiting for Omar Gatlato  presents twenty-nine artists from Algeria and the Algerian diaspora. Through a selection of works dating from 1965 to the present day, some specially produced for the occasion, she offers a unique look at this artistic context, drawing inspiration from Merzack Allouache's classic cinema,  Omar Gatlato  (1976), known for being the first Algerian film focused on an individual experience of emancipation and self-discovery. Like the feature film, the works presented manifest, on the scale of daily experience, a surrealist humor, a meticulous attention to the body and the ambivalence of the feeling of belonging.

Waiting for Omar Gatlato  is also the title of the work published in 1979 by Wassyla Tamzali, Algerian lawyer, writer and feminist, devoted to the beginnings of Algerian experimental cinema. By associating references to the play by Samuel Beckett  Waiting for Godot  and to the film by Merzak Allouache, the author exposes her dual sensitivity and opens an important conceptual avenue. These two portraits of anti-heroes striving to find meaning in everyday life shed light on the way in which artists and filmmakers confront decoloniality and criticism of European knowledge regimes.

The works of the twenty-nine artists presented in the exhibition  Waiting for Omar Gatlato  offer diverse, unstable and polyphonic representations of life in Algeria and in its diaspora. Rigorously critical in their relationship to the formal legacy of colonialism, deconstructing notions such as Orientalism or the monument, the works represent the reflection of several generations of artists on their society and testify to how art continues to grow. think about decolonization.

Les huit années de lutte de l’Algérie pour son indépendance (1954 - 1962) sont associées à l’euphorie révolutionnaire et aux combats antiracistes et indépendantistes des années 1960 et 1970 (que l’on pense aux actions du Congrès national africain contre l’apartheid, aux liens tissés avec les Black Panthers ou encore avec le nationalisme basque...). Au cours des cinquante dernières années, l’héritage politique s’est durci en un système de parti unique fondé sur une mythologisation de la guerre. Les artistes algérien·ne·s opposent à cette mythologie nationale une expérience quotidienne des espaces publics et privés, que ce soit dans leurs œuvres, ou pour certain·e·s, depuis février 2019, avec leurs propres corps, dans la rue. Cette exposition témoigne de combats et d’engagements multiples pour l’émancipation dans toutes ses formes d’expression.

Triangle - Asterides is joining forces with the National Center for Plastic Arts and the Algerian organization Box24, to give the exhibition  Waiting for Omar Gatlato  an unprecedented scale by allowing it to bring together a large selection of works related to the Algerian artistic context. .

About the National Center for Plastic Arts

Le Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) est l’un des principaux opérateurs de la politique du ministère de la Culture dans le domaine des arts visuels contemporains. Il enrichit, pour le compte de l’État, le Fonds national d’art contemporain, collection nationale qu’il conserve et fait connaître par des prêts et des dépôts en France et à l'étranger. Avec près de 105 000 œuvres acquises depuis plus de deux siècles auprès d’artistes vivants, cette collection constitue un fonds représentatif de la variété des courants artistiques. Acteur culturel incontournable, le Cnap encourage la scène artistique dans toute sa diversité et accompagne les artistes ainsi que les professionnels par plusieurs dispositifs de soutien. Par ailleurs, il valorise les projets soutenus par la mise en œuvre d’actions de diffusion, sous la forme d’éditions, de conférences ou encore d’expositions.

The partnership with Triangle - Astérides for the exhibition  Waiting for Omar Gatlato  is part of the follow-up to the curatorial research grant, obtained by Natasha Marie Llorens in 2017. It results, among other things, in the commission of two new works from Fayçal Baghriche and Sara Sadik, artists in the exhibition, and through the loan of works from the collection.

About Box24

Box24 est une organisation artistique expérimentale fondée par Walid Aïdoud à Alger en 2008 dans le but de soutenir l’expérimentation et la collaboration internationale, en partie à travers son implication de long terme dans le projet ARTIfariti, un festival artistique se tenant chaque année dans le Sahara occidental en solidarité avec les luttes du peuple Sahraoui. Dans le cadre de l’exposition En Attendant Omar Gatlato, ce partenariat a permis d'étendre le regard au delà des artistes les plus établis travaillant en Algérie.
