Born in 1951 in Nabeul, Tunisia, Khaled Ben Slimane was supposed to become a lawyer; instead, he graduated from Escola Massana in Barcelona in 1977 and then, from the Institut Technologique d’Art, d’Architecture et d’Urbanisme in Tunis in 1982. Between 2004 and 2005, he resided and studied Japanese calligraphy at Idemitsu Museum of Arts in Tokyo. Ben Slimane is a versatile artist – painter, sculptor, and ceramist – working with a wide range of materials such as paper, wood, canvas, ceramic, and bronze. Since a very young age, Khaled Ben Slimane preferred solitude and was interested in the quest for spirituality that he would find in Sufism. In his oeuvre, he refers to this philosophy through the repetition of the word ‘Huwa’ – He – evoking God, the Unique, and Creator. Highlighting this part of Islamic History, he conveys an emotional power that he shares with the spectators. However, he doesn’t use calligraphy from a traditional perspective since he seeks innovation. He consequently combines his skills in manipulating the brushes: he draws Arabic letters through a Japanese technique. His compositions contain light and air, allowing space for reflection and meditation. Khaled Ben Slimane lives and works in Tunis.
