Mahmood Shubbar was born in Babylon, Iraq, in 1965. He received a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Baghdad University in 1986 and later on received a Ph.D. in Fine Arts. A member of the Iraqi Artists Associations and the Society of Fine Iraqis, he taught at the Babel University in Iraq. In 2000 and 2001, he was awarded first prize at the International Festival of arts in Egypt. Shubbar spontaneously creates abstract paintings using aggressive brush strokes. He also creates conceptual installations using mixed media that address the war and political turmoil in Iraq, such as signposts of his native country that are tainted and damaged. The artist lives and works between Beirut and Iraq.
