RIHAM EL SADANY, Egypt (1978)
Bio
Riham El Sadany was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1978. She graduated from the Helwan Univesity with a Bachelor in Fine Arts, an MFA, and a Ph.D. in Performance Arts. In 2007 she founded the MUST gallery at Misr University for Science & Technology Cairo and began teaching art there as well as at the American University in Cairo. A multimedia artist, El Sadany’s artworks are characterized by Surrealism, using intense colors and inspired by Picasso’s childlike impulsiveness and Frida Kahlo’s expression of agony; her portrayals are always distorted and detached from reality. She transports the viewer into her world of dramatic fantasy, conveying men and women who are robust but soft and sensual at the same time. Inspired by Egyptian mythology, the artist sometimes adds horns to her portraits of women as a sign of strength and power. El Sadany still lives and works between Egypt and the US.
