Born in 1920, the plastic artist, Suzanne al-Cheikhli completed her studies at the Institute of Applied Arts in France, in 1940, before she moved with her husband Ismail al-Cheikhli to Baghdad, Iraq. Although she was not born in Iraq, she cherished the country and depicted its cultural heritage. To restore collective memory, she represented Iraqi houses, Baghdad's alleyways, and Iraqi daily life. Suzanne painted simplified human figures against mosaic-like backgrounds inspired by Hafidh Droubi. But, what signifies Suzanne's work most was her joyful colours applied in loose brush strokes. She adopted both watercolours on paper and oil on canvas in her paintings.  Suzanne taught art in local schools in Baghdad for more than three decades and joined the Union of Iraqi Artists and the Society of Plastic Artists in Iraq. In the 1960's she participated with her husband in several exhibitions in Iraq and abroad.

The artist passed away in 2008.
