Bio
Mustapha Akrim is a prominent figure in a new wave of Moroccan artists that are reshaping the country's visual arts landscape. Graduating from the Institut National des Beaux-Arts de Tétouan in 2008, Akrim's installations delve into the shifting nature of work and blur the lines between construction and artistic creation amidst society's constant change.
Part of a generation that rejects the post-colonial aesthetics of the past, Akrim and his peers are pioneers in forging a fresh, uninhibited mode of expression. With a keen understanding of history and power dynamics, they are rewriting the fundamentals of visual expression in Morocco.
Akrim's works have traveled to worldwide venues, including L’appartement 22 and Le Cube in Rabat, the Palais Bahia during the 3rd Marrakesh Biennale, the MACBA in Barcelona, Darat al Funun in Amman, and the MUCEM in Marseille, among others. He has also participated in workshops across Namibia, Jordan, France, and his native Morocco. Today Akrim works and resides between Rabat and Salé.
