ALI JABBAR, Iraq (1963)
Bio
Born in Iraq in 1963, Ali Jabbar is a contemporary painter, sculptor, and designer. He lived in Denmark from 1992-2009 before moving to London, where he currently resides. He completed his studies at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, in 1987, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad, in 1990. Jabbar continued his art education at the KADKA School of Design in Copenhagen, Denmark, and graduated in 2002. He taught fine art at Copenhagen High School and lectured at the Omani Arts society and Aria Gallery in Tehran. He contributed to numerous symposiums and significant conferences.
The multi-disciplinary artist created bronze statues in Iraq, and other stone and stainless steel monumental abstract sculptures all over the Middle East. Moreover, he produced pop like figurative paintings that linger between fiction and non-fiction. Jabbar formulates his figures with intertwined bold shapes and decorative patterns applied in vibrant hues. Although hollowed in vision, they are dominant and present in his large scale canvases. Jabbar’s most remarkable work is a series of minimalist illustrations of public figures. The iconic images of celebrities and politicians were reduced to shapes and colors but still remained recognizable.
Jabbar participated in the Baghdad International Biennial, the Cairo Painting Biennial, the Tehran Painting Biennial, the Grand Palais Biennial in Paris, the Sharjah International Biennial, and the X Florence international Biennale. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. He held more than eleven solo exhibitions distributed between Denmark, Germany, Jordan, Spain, and London. In 2015 one of his monumental sculptures was installed at the sculpture park in Guangzhou, China.
