FATIMA HASSAN EL FAROUJ, Morocco (1945 - 2011)
Bio
Born in 1945 in the city of Tetouan, Morocco, Fatima El-Farouj was a self-taught artist introduced to painting by her husband, Hassan El-Farouj, also an artist himself. In the 1960s, she started developing her exclusive style after being charmed while discovering the works of other artists. Living and working in Rabat, she was initially a professional seamstress; she used on her canvas her skills in embroidery, sewing, and henna tattoo with the dexterity of her technical gestures. El-Farouj constructed her compositions by superposing the elements, partitioning the colors, and stratification, she payed particular attention to details. Her free expression and naïve style evoked traditional embroidery: her works were almost ornamental. They reveal an imaginary universe full of vivid colors and symbols depicting genre scenes, landscapes, local customs, and celebrations. Her saturated canvases invite the viewer to a journey or even a dream where the Morocco and African aspects are omnipresent. Fatima Hassan El-Farouj illustrated the joy of life that comes from her land. She passed away in 2011.
