FERYEL LAKHDAR, Tunisia (1965)
Bio
Born in 1965 in Tunis, Feryel Lakhdar studied at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture and École Supérieure Nationale des Beaux-Arts, both in Paris. She stayed in the capital city to complete her education in urban and furniture design and produced set decorations for movies in parallel. She contributed to some restoration and renovation projects of public places like Château de Chinon, France, and its city center. Painter and sculptor, the artist found inspiration in Tunisian culture and highlighted the position of the woman within this culture and society explicitly. However, she didn’t illustrate a realistic image in her works since, she preferred to convey her feelings and impressions, which stem from her childhood memories. She unveiled the voluptuous shapes, the sensuality of the bejeweled female figure through a technique with flat colors, simplified lines, and abstracted forms.
