GOUIDER TRIKI, Tunisia (1949)
Bio
Born in 1949 in Nabeul, Tunisia, Gouider Triki studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis from 1966 to 1971. Then, he completed his education attending the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris between 1971 to 1974 and started interning at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris the following year. While staying in the capital city, he frequented several painters and engravers with whom he learned techniques like woodcutting and wood engraving. In 1980, he returned to Tunisia, where he spent his time between farm life and painting. His works are a manifestation of the artistic practice and visual culture from North Africa; he uses symbols and motifs which stem from the pre-Islamic, Berber, and Islamic heritage. Triki's compositions are saturated with small characters, animals, ghosts, or fantastic creatures rendering an imaginary world; the artist embarks the spectators into spiritual journeys. Gouider Triki lives and works in Lezdine, Tunisia.
