Joanna-Janet Hagopian, an Armenian visual artist who was born in Iran and later moved to Lebanon, privileges the introspective through a focus on structural elements. Her art often explores themes of identity, isolation, and existentialism, which she depicts through her abstractions as she “creates the inhabitable space that starts to resemble story and life experience.” She translates her own personal experience—belonging to three different cultures—onto the canvas using abstracted shapes, layers, and color. This allows viewers to form their own connection to the artwork by drawing from their own experiences and perspectives.

In Reborn, 2015, Hagopian presents an array of abstract shapes and forms that invite the viewer to engage and relate personally to the piece. The square placed in the left center of the work suggests another artwork emerging from within the original or possibly a window with a view to another time as a connection to the notion of rebirth.
