MAJIDA KHATTARI, Morocco (1966)
Bio
Majida Khattari was born in Erfoud, Morocco, in 1966. After completing her studies at the School of Fine Arts in Casablanca, she moved to Paris and graduated from the Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts in 1995. A multimedia artist, Khattari’s work encompasses photography, fashion design, video, performances, and installations. In her works, Khattari focuses on women in the Arab world and their relation with the West. In Sac A Main (2008-2009), a veiled woman is photographed carrying a luxurious purse that has the form and color of a hand grenade as a critique of how the West views oriental women. The artist also tackles the confinement of Arab women’s bodies by designing sculptural dresses inspired by traditional Islamic Hijab and Niqab and displays them during performances as if in a fashion show. Khattari lives and works in Paris.
