Mohamed Sarghini was born in Morocco in 1923. A pioneer of the Moroccan art movement, he was the first student of his native country to study art abroad in 1942 and completed his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. Following the Moroccan Independence in 1956, Sarghini was appointed the first director of L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Tétouan. In his works, Sarghini paints scenes of his country, including detailed portraits, cityscapes, gardens, and doors. Through his oeuvre, the artist accentuates the rhythm of the passing of time in the old cities and streets of Morocco with its inhabitants, inscribing his paintings with architectural forms and arabesque inspirations. Sarghini passed away in 1991.
