RAFAT ASAD, Palestine (1974)
Bio
Rafat Asad was born in Nablus, Palestine, in 1974. He graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Al Najah University in 1998. Afterward, he attended a three-month art residency at Delfina Studios in London. Asad narrates his life as a Palestinian citizen through abstract and figurative paintings, videos, and installations. His works address his childhood memories, his homeland, and the difficulties the Palestinian people face, such as the barriers and checkpoints while journeying inside their invaded country. Asad also depicts idealized Palestinian landscapes in a figurative manner such as his series Marj Ibn Amer (2015), the title refers to a valley in the north of Occupied Palestine that the artist painted from imagination because he has no right to visit since the Israeli occupation. Asad lives and works in Ramallah, Palestine.
