Taysir Sharaf was born in Jerusalem, Occupied Palestine in 1939. Following the Nakba in 1948, he fled to Egypt, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Alexandria University, worked as a cartoonist and later on returned to Jerusalem. In 1967 Jerusalem was invaded by Israel, which greatly affected the artist and his works. The act of painting was therapeutic for Sharaf, a manner, and a way to let out his anger. His works assert the Arab and Palestinian identity of Jerusalem and convey the sufferings and oppression of his people. Sharaf’s works are also inscribed with written Arabic letters, verses, and calligraphy that further consolidate his grasp on his Arab heritage. He passed away in 2001.
