Born in 1924 in Tunis, Zoubeir Turki is the youngest brother of the artist Hedi Turki. He studied at the University of Ez-Zitouna, Montfleury, and Institut des Hautes Études, both in the capital city. In parallel, he attended classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tunis. In 1946, he started working in administration and was recruited as an Arabic teacher for French schools. However, part of the Tunisian nationalist movement called ‘Neo-Destour’ against the French protectorate, he was forced into exile and established in Sweden. There, he joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1953 and 1958. Zoubeir Turki returned to his homeland two years after Tunisian independence in 1956, and actively contributed to the emerging cultural and artistic scene of the country; he was notably appointed president of the National Union of Plastic and Graphic arts and the Cultural Commission of the city of Tunis. The artist tackled mainly the Tunisian culture and traditions in his works: he illustrated the Tunisian interiors, leisure, people working, and featured the female figure. These images are a testimony of daily life. Besides, he remains famous for the execution of the bronze statue of the historiographer Ibn Khaldoun located at Avenue Habib Bourguiba. Zoubeir Turki passed away in 2009 at the age of 84.
