SHAFIC ABBOUD, Lebanon (1926 - 2004)
Bio
Written by WAFA ROZ
Born in 1926 in Mhaidtheh, Mount Lebanon, Shafic Abboud was a prominent modern artist who left a significant mark on the history of Lebanese abstract art. Though he was initially training to become an engineer, he abandoned this path to pursue a career in art instead, attending ALBA - Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts - from 1945 to 1947. He was trained by Ferdinando Manetti and mentored by Cesar Gemayel, the latter of whom had been the first to witness his works when the artist was only fifteen years old. From 1968 to 1975, he taught at the Institute of Fine Arts at the Lebanese University, moving back and forth between Beirut and Paris, which had become his second home. He was a talented colorist who belonged to École de Paris and who taught ‘Technology of Color ‘at Unité Pédagogique d’Architecture in Paris from 1978 to 1982.
At the age of twelve, Abboud attempted to produce his own oil paint by mixing watercolor with olive oil, which certainly did not work. Persistent as he was, the artist ended up becoming an alchemist of sorts, preparing his own hues using natural pigments. He registered every single formula and mode of application in his cherished notebooks.
Yearning for innovation, Abboud moved to Paris in 1947. He enrolled at the Faculté des Lettres and explored different currents of modernism including post-impressionism, fauvism and cubism in the studios of Andre Lhote, Jean Metzinger, Othon Friesz, and Fernand Leger, depicting the festive cultural life of Paris in lively figurations. Strained with financial difficulties, the artist had to return to Beirut in 1949, where he held his first solo exhibition a year later with the support of Georges Cyr. He produced warm-toned figurative paintings portraying the popular folkloric culture, inspired by oriental arabesque and Persian miniatures.
Abboud returned to Paris in 1951, where he worked as a construction painter, a guide at the Louvre, and a server at Royaumont Abbey in order to sustain himself. Within this vibrant scene and cultural hub, he befriended lots of intellectuals such as the composer Andre Boucourechliev and the historian Paul Veyne. After being granted a scholarship from the Lebanese government and supported by collectors, Abboud enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris from 1952 to 1956, refining his skills in painting, lithography, and engraving. He also traveled throughout Europe, exploring the Netherlands and Italy. Motivated by childhood memories, Abboud produced two artist’s books, La Souris in silkscreen prints and Le Bouna in black and white etchings, that echoed his grandmother’s stories and drew from his grandfather’s naïve illustrations. In 1953, he decided to abandon figuration and yield totally to abstraction. His canvases displayed entangled patches of geometrical shapes within sensibly planned compositions, painted in gradations of glowing colors, often dominated by a single tone. Abboud associated his vision to that of Pierre Bonnard, who abandoned three-dimensional modeling in favor of flat color areas that captured the spirit of a moment.
Meeting art critic Roger Van Gindertael in 1955 was a turning point in Abboud’s artistic career. The pair became lifelong friends, and Van Gindertael helped Abboud gain access to the exclusive Parisian art scene. In 1959, Abboud was the first Arab artist to showcase his work, Saison II, at the first Paris Biennale; the painting comprised scattered rectangular shapes in a palette of pink, burgundy, and violet. Although he was known for his discreet, austere personality, the artist was a wild and passionate painter who longed for freedom in life and style. Never the talkative type, he nevertheless expressed a great deal through his narrative lyrical abstractions. Throughout the 1960s, he continued to push aesthetic boundaries, incorporating experimental elements into his work. During this period, his paintings featured sumptuous layers of oil paint or tempera, spread, smeared or scratched in expressive strokes to form organic shapes. He balanced horizontal planes with vertical ones, occasionally gesturing to figuration in opaque, deconstructed compositions. Across bright fields of complementary and contrasting colors, the artist struck his canvas with luminous lashes of pearl white or light grey paint. Colors and forms narrated his life events, supported by evocative titles that escorted the viewer to the stories behind his works. His themes were as varied as his color schemes, including the female nude, the night, windows, landscapes, and childhood memories. Some paintings were made in response to personal emotional triggers, such as a question posed by his then-two-year-old daughter, Christine: “Tu connais la mer?’’ (“Do you know the sea?”). This question resulted in a 1964 painting of the same name, a dazzling composition of greens and blues that would later find its way to Centre Pompidou.
Abboud hardly produced works related to politics; however, he had the urge to express his distress following the Arab defeat in 1967 depicted in a triptych entitled Après La Nuit, or 5 Juin – a mostly black series featuring minimal strokes of violet, white and red. He usually worked in series, such as Les Fenêtres (1974), which depicted the exterior landscape that seemed to penetrate his inner space. In 1978, Abboud, already a French citizen, settled in Paris, avoiding trips to Lebanon due to the contemporaneous civil war. During the 1980s, he produced paintings reminiscent of Matisse, drawing inspiration from Islamic and Byzantine Art. Moreover, he ventured into three-dimensional work, producing sculpture and terracotta, and painting a collection of blue ceramic plates.
In 1994, after an absence of sixteen years, Galerie Janine Rubeiz organized a solo exhibition for Abboud in Beirut. Abboud passed away in Paris in 2004 and was buried, per his wishes, in his native village in Mount Lebanon.
