Born in 1961 in Hama, Syria, Safwan Dahoul obtained his BA at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Damascus University in 1983 and then completed his education in Belgium, where he earned a doctorate from...

Born in 1961 in Hama, Syria, Safwan Dahoul obtained his BA at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Damascus University in 1983 and then completed his education in Belgium, where he earned a doctorate from the Higher Institute of Plastic Arts in Mons in 1997. Upon his return to Syria, he teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts. As of the late 1980s, the artist explores the dream as a subject matter: in his Dream series, he depicts enigmatic male and female figures with an aesthetic combining Cubist style, Pharaonic, and Assyrian art. Using muted colors, often white and black, he reveals the inner emotions of the characters through their gestures, body moves, and eyes with simple lines. In a peaceful atmosphere, the artist confronts the human being with any effects, physical and psychological, that he could experience in the different steps of his life. Safwan Dahoul is based in Dubai.
