Born in Beirut in 1980, Alfred Tarazi is a Lebanese artist whose practice has been shaped by the events of the Lebanese Civil War. He holds a degree in graphic design from the American University of Beirut and had completed a residency at Krinzinger Projekte in Vienna in 2011. Tarazi analyzes, retells, and processes the memory of the Lebanese civil war in a body of work that ranges across painting, photography, drawing, digital collage, sculpture, and installation.

As an artist who belongs to the post-war generation, Tarazi scrutinizes the traumatic events in the aftermath of the civil war at all levels, be it political, geographical, or social. As such, the artist tries to reconnect with this historical period of conflict. His work is based on archival photographs and documentation as a source of his investigation. In his pursuit, Tarazi interrogates the integrity of historical documentation and questions selective archival practice. He is in constant inquiry and reassessment of the registered past.

Tarazi overlays images in digital collages depicting Lebanon before and after the war; he narrates the past within a stretched area into the present, bringing to life eerie circumstances. The viewer is set in a flashback position in a present-day. Tarazi believes that the print culture of the twentieth century is the most potent symbol of modernity in the Middle East. His studio in the dusty industrial quarter of Quarantina reveals piles of magazines, books, newspaper archives, and found objects that the artist has amassed over the years.

Alfred Tarazi is a Member of Atelier Hapsitus, a multi-disciplinary group founded and led by architect Nadim Karam, and an instigator of the Feel Collective, a group of cultural activists who aim to change thinking patterns. Tarazi is currently based in Beirut.
