WALID RAAD, Lebanon (1967)
Bio
Written by Wafa Roz & L’Or Imane Puymartin
Walid Raad was born in 1967 in Chbaniyeh, Lebanon. He immigrated to the United States in 1982, fleeing the mounting violence of the Lebanese Civil War, and earned his BFA in photography in 1989 from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. In 1996, the artist earned a PhD in cultural and visual studies from the University of Rochester. He is currently a professor at Cooper Union, an elite school of art in New York. Two years after the Lebanese civil war ended in 1990, Raad returned to Lebanon for one year and encountered the emerging postwar art scene. He collaborated with the Canadian-Lebanese artist Jace Salloum on the documentary Up to the South(1993), a 60-minute film investigating the modes in which local fighters, villagers and intellectuals expressed their opposition to the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. He was also inspired by the work of writer and video artist Jalal Toufic, whose work reflects on trauma, memory, and the departure of culture. Toufic dedicated his celebrated book, The Withdrawal of Tradition Past a Surpassing Disaster (2009) to Raad.
His first major body of work, The Atlas Group(1989-2004) is indicative of Raad’s interests in exploiting the grey zone between certainty and doubt to explore historiography, trauma, and the absurdity of war. The Atlas Group is a fictional archive that researches, documents and reflects on the dynamics of the Lebanese war. This body of work includes both historical and reconstructed documents, notebooks, collages, photographs and films appropriated or produced by the artist himself. He used fiction and trickery in shaping his documents, yet their inauthenticity is not always apparent, drawing the viewer to productively question the authority of the archive and the place of truth in reflecting on past trauma. To further blur the line between fact and fiction, he re-dated and attributed his works to an array of fictitious characters such as the historian Dr. Fakhoury, the hostage Souheil Bachar, the artist Suha Traboulsi and others who in turn, supposedly, donated these works to “The Atlas Group.” These photographs and documents were later meticulously presented in multimedia installations, often followed by talks carefully prepared by the artist.
Departing from the Atlas Group, and reflecting on the idea of a surpassing disaster, Raad creates his second major body of work, Scratching on Things I Could Disavow(2007 - ongoing). It is a correlated series of photographs, videos, sculptures, installations, and performative presentations that investigate the infrastructure of art in the Arab world through the scope of political, social, economic, and military conflicts in the region. He illustrates how Arab art history is being forged within this infrastructure, questioning corporate and cultural investments in the category of “Arab art.” Scratching on Things I Could Disavowis marked by narratives of absence and withdrawal – ironically depicted in the disappearance and shrinking of art works. While this project has been considered to satirize the recent upcropping of (largely Western) museums in the Arab world, Scratching’s further objective is to ponder the supremacy and authority of ideologies created by a superstructure, asking how an idea becomes a ruling one through economic and socio-psychological channels. In this body of work, he produces theatrical installations, positing the “white cube” or neoclassical arena of the art museum as a stage for his presentations. The artist calls these lecture-performances “walkthroughs,” assuming what art historian Carrie Lambert-Beatty has called a “para-fictional persona” as he educates his audience.
Raad’s performative and object-based work seeks to draw attention to the unnoticed, navigating between the public sphere of “found” facts and the private sphere of constructed ones to broaden his audience’s conception of truth. His works can be understood in relation to the oeuvres of conceptual artists such as Fred Wilson and Michael Asher, the postmodern appropriations of Sherrie Levine and Louise Lawler, and to the performative strategies of Joseph Beuys and Sophie Calle amongst others.
Raad lives and works in New York.
